Howard Lederer was born into in a family of five in which he enjoyed gambling on different card games at a young age. He discovered himself becoming very competitive in these card games as he was competing against his dad. After graduating from Sr. High school, Howard decided to put college on hold for a bit and moved away to New York City to participate in some serious chess. While competing in chess, he was introduced to a poker game going on in the rear of the room. Howard’s first 2 years were tough as he would play many hours and fail to win a majority of the time. He earned some additional money by becoming an assistant for the poker players. He judged he could improve his game by analyzing his life away from poker. He brought about an attempt to acquire more sleep and focus attention more on the game.
The definite advancement in his game happened when he started gambling at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the the most favorable players would often challenge one another. Howard had access into some of the greatest minds in chess. With their help, Howard Lederer would sharpen his logical thinking abilities. He applied these strategy concepts to the game of No-Limit holdem.
Howard also assisted his sibling Annie Duke master poker. She was a superb student of poker as she constantly asked questions about how to make the correct decision. Howard told Annie Duke to move out to Sin City and play in the World Series of Poker tournaments. Annie is one of the best women players the poker arena has ever seen. He relocated to Las Vegas in 1993 and competed in money games for the successive decade. When the WPT grew in popularity, he made the decision to compete in more tournaments.
